Prohibited Cellular Phone Use While Driving in Denton County

Effective June 1, 2017, it is illegal to use a hand-held communication device while driving in Denton, Texas. This effectively means that drivers can no longer use a cell phone for text messages, email correspondence, voice call, face time or other physical use by hand.

The physical use of a cell phone in a vehicle is limited to answering a call or terminating a call. Additionally, a cell phone may be used as a GPS if the phone is mounted. Otherwise, if you are pulled over for use of a hand-held communication device, you could face a charge of a class c misdemeanor with a fine up to $500.00.

Alternatively, "hands free" communication is still permitted for most drivers, which includes communication through bluetooth. Use of hands free communication is prohibited in some situations. For example, under Texas law, drivers under the age of 18 are prohibited from using any wireless communication while driving - prohibiting the use of hand-held or hands-free communication for minors.
