Social Media and Why It’s Important to Be Careful What You Post When You have an Open Court Case

On Behalf of | Apr 25, 2018 | Civil, Family Law, Firm News, Guardianship, Probate |

There are a variety of benefits and risks associated with relevant technology. Facebook has nearly 2 billion users. A new Facebook account is created five times every second. One statistic states that 50% of 18 to 24-year olds go on Facebook every morning when they wake up. Twitter has over 300 million active accounts. There are around 500 million tweets sent each day. More than 80% of young people check their twitter accounts daily. YouTube has more than 1 billion users and hundreds of millions of hours of video.

If you are in the middle of a court case, be aware of what you are posting on your social media because it is likely that your opponent is checking your social media and prepared to use what you post against you. We specifically ask our clients not to try their case on Facebook or other social media, make comments about the Judge on social media, make comments about their opponent on social media, or do things that would tend to hurt their case.

It is important to consider imposing privacy settings and limiting access to certain groups of people regarding postings and photos on social media.
